ORBI Construction Summer School is a two-week hands-on workshop held in Jels, Denmark, organized by ORBI in collaboration with the Det Kongelige Akademi and Dinesen.
The aim of the program is to explore collective construction through craftsmanship, experimentation, and life in community. During the workshop, participants designed and built several structures and elements at different scales, including a bell tower, a 1:3 study model of a mass oven, handmade bricks, and the completion of a wooden drying barn through the construction of a ramp and roof finishes.
The work combined traditional building techniques with direct material engagement. Wood shaping, brick fabrication, assembly, and on-site construction were carried out collectively, allowing participants to develop practical skills while understanding the relationship between design and making.
Beyond the construction process, the workshop emphasized communal living and shared responsibilities. Daily life alternated between building activities, collective meals, outdoor moments, and discussions, creating a strong sense of collaboration and presence within the rural Danish landscape.
This experience highlighted the value of learning through making and demonstrated how architecture and construction can become both a physical and social practice.
